Chicago, IL (July 29, 2026) – Three people were hurt on the night of July 28 after an ATV and an SUV were involved in a collision on Diversey Ave just west of Cicero Ave in Chicago’s Belmont Cragin neighborhood.

Police said the crash happened at about 9:03 p.m. as a woman driving a black SUV was turning left into a parking lot. During the turn, her vehicle came into contact with an ATV operated by a 22-year-old man who was carrying a 16-year-old passenger. The passenger-side door of the SUV was heavily damaged.

The SUV driver was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in good condition. The ATV operator was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in critical condition, while the teenage passenger was also taken there in good condition. Citations were still pending as of Wednesday morning.

Additional information about the accident had not been released at the time of publication. The cause of the crash remains under review as investigators continue to gather details.

We hope everyone affected by this incident makes a full and speedy recovery.

How Left-Turn ATV Collisions Are Commonly Reviewed

Crashes involving left-turning vehicles and all-terrain vehicles usually require a detailed review of several factors. Investigators typically examine the movements of each vehicle, visibility at the intersection or driveway entrance, roadway markings, and whether traffic laws were followed. Vehicle damage, witness statements, and any available surveillance or dash camera footage may also help establish the sequence of events.

Medical reports can provide a clearer picture of the extent of injuries as treatment continues. In cases involving ATVs on public roads, investigators may also determine whether the vehicle was being operated in an area where it was legally permitted. These findings can help explain how the collision occurred while providing a more complete understanding of the circumstances surrounding the crash.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
3Consider having your case reviewed by a qualified attorney who can guide you through the next steps. They will safeguard your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.
