Portland, ME (August 26, 2026) – Three people were seriously injured on August 26 after an 88-year-old New Hampshire man mistakenly entered I-295 traveling the wrong way near Tukey’s Bridge in Portland.
The head-on collision occurred at about 7:15 p.m. near Exit 8. The 2020 Subaru Outback driven by Ronald Ferguson, 88, of Nelson, New Hampshire, entered the southbound lanes and traveled against traffic.
The Subaru then struck a 2023 Mitsubishi Eclipse traveling southbound. Ferguson, his female passenger and the female driver of the Mitsubishi were taken to Maine Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Two of the four I-295 lanes remained closed for just over two hours while emergency units worked at the site. Southern Maine Towing and Maietta’s Towing removed the vehicles, while Maine DOT Safety Patrol also assisted.
The cause of the accident is still being examined as the investigation continues.
