What Happens When a Vehicle Rolls Over During a Multi-Vehicle Crash?
Rollover crashes are among the more complex types of roadway collisions. When a vehicle overturns, investigators usually examine factors such as vehicle movement, roadway design, speed, weather conditions, and the actions of all drivers involved. In crashes involving multiple vehicles, determining the sequence of vehicle contacts can also be a key part of the review process.
Large trucks and taller vehicles generally have a higher center of gravity than passenger cars, which can increase the risk of overturning under certain circumstances. Road conditions, sudden steering maneuvers, and contact with other vehicles may also contribute to a rollover. Damage patterns, tire marks, and vehicle positions are commonly reviewed to help establish how the chain of events unfolded and to provide a clearer understanding of the collision.
