Clifton, NY (June 3, 2026) – A resident was hurt on Tuesday night after a two-alarm apartment fire broke out inside a six-story building on Bowen Street in the Park Hill neighborhood of Clifton.
The fire was reported around 8:30 p.m. on the fourth floor of 55 Bowen Street, near Targee Street and Sobel Court. Emergency units arrived to find flames spreading through the walls of the building, creating difficult conditions inside the structure. More than 140 personnel worked to bring the flames under control.
One person received minor injuries and was taken to Northwell Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze for treatment. Hundreds of residents and nearby neighbors gathered outside after the building was cleared. A resident told local media that many families experienced major losses during the evening.
Officials said the same apartment complex had already been affected by another two-alarm blaze earlier Tuesday. Additional information about the fire had not been made public as of this report.
Investigators are still working to determine what led to the fire. We are keeping the injured resident and displaced families in our thoughts during this difficult time.
Why Apartment Building Fires Can Spread Quickly
Fires inside apartment buildings can become difficult to contain because flames and smoke may travel through hidden spaces such as walls, ceilings, and ventilation systems. In multi-story structures, narrow hallways and shared utility systems can also increase the challenge of keeping flames from spreading between units.
Large apartment fires often require evacuations even when only one section of a building is directly affected. Smoke exposure, heat damage, and water used during firefighting efforts can make nearby apartments temporarily unsafe for residents. Older buildings may present additional difficulties due to aging electrical systems or complex layouts.
After a residential fire, crews typically inspect the structure carefully before people are allowed to return. Restoration work may include repairing walls, wiring, plumbing, and smoke damage throughout the property.
