Syracuse, NY (July 31, 2026) — A 3-year-old girl died early on Friday morning after a single-vehicle wreck at Park Street and DeWitt Street in Syracuse, according to the police. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, a woman whose name has not been released, has been charged with DWI, according to Onondaga County Assistant District Attorney Frank Pelosi. She could face additional charges, including vehicular manslaughter.

A car seat was found outside the vehicle, though it is unknown whether the girl was in it at the time, Pelosi said. Two other passengers in the vehicle were also taken to the hospital and listed in stable condition.

The driver was also hospitalized and listed in stable condition, with a police officer accompanying her. She is expected to be arraigned once she is released from the hospital, according to Pelosi. The exact cause of the collision remained under investigation as this report was filed.

Our thoughts are with the girl’s family during this difficult time.

Why Must Car Seats Be Properly Secured Every Time

A car seat only provides real protection if it’s installed correctly and the child is properly buckled in every single time, not just most of the time. Even a well-made car seat offers little benefit if the base isn’t secured tightly to the vehicle or if the harness straps aren’t snug against the child’s body.

Common mistakes include a harness that’s too loose, a chest clip positioned too low on the torso, or a seat installed with too much side-to-side movement at the base. Many parents also unknowingly use a seat that doesn’t match their child’s current height, weight, or age, since children can outgrow a seat’s size limits well before it seems obvious.

Many fire departments and police stations offer free car seat inspection events where a trained technician checks the installation and harness fit at no cost. These checks can catch small but important mistakes that are easy to miss without hands-on guidance, and they take only a few minutes to complete.
