Why Pedestrian Crashes Outside Crosswalks Need Careful Review?

Pedestrian collisions usually require a detailed examination of roadway conditions, vehicle speed, lighting, visibility, and the movements of everyone involved. When a person is outside a designated crosswalk, investigators also consider whether drivers had sufficient time and distance to react and whether other environmental factors affected visibility.

Evidence such as skid marks, vehicle damage, surveillance footage, and witness statements may help establish the sequence of events. Crash reconstruction specialists can also evaluate where the pedestrian was located and how the vehicle approached before the collision occurred.

Drivers can help reduce the risk of pedestrian collisions by remaining alert in areas where people may be walking, especially during early morning or nighttime hours. Likewise, pedestrians can improve their safety by crossing at designated locations whenever possible and making themselves as visible as they can.
