Why Are Pedestrians Especially Vulnerable in Traffic?
Pedestrians have little physical protection when compared with people inside passenger vehicles, so even a collision at a relatively low speed can result in serious injuries. The risk can increase on roads with multiple lanes, higher traffic volumes, or frequent turning movements. Drivers may also have difficulty seeing pedestrians when lighting, weather, parked vehicles, or other obstructions limit visibility.
Drivers should scan carefully for people walking near intersections and adjust their speed to match traffic and roadway conditions. Looking beyond the vehicle immediately ahead can help motorists identify pedestrians or other hazards sooner. Extra attention is important when turning because pedestrians may be crossing from either side of the roadway.
Pedestrians can also reduce risks by using marked crossings and following pedestrian signals when available. Wearing reflective or bright clothing can improve visibility during nighttime or low-light conditions. Remaining alert to approaching vehicles and avoiding distractions can provide more time to respond when traffic conditions change.
