How Do Severe Leg Injuries Affect Crash Recovery?
Serious leg injuries can involve damage to bones, blood vessels, muscles, and surrounding tissue. An open fracture occurs when a broken bone is associated with an open wound, which can increase the risk of complications and require urgent medical treatment. Early care can help control bleeding and stabilize the injury before further treatment is provided.
Recovery from a major leg injury can vary depending on the location and severity of the fracture and whether other injuries are present. Treatment may involve surgery, immobilization, rehabilitation, and follow-up care. Some people may need assistance with walking and everyday activities during the recovery process.
Vehicle occupants can reduce the risk of serious injuries by consistently using properly fitted seat belts. Seat belts help keep occupants positioned inside the vehicle during a crash and can reduce the likelihood of being thrown around the passenger compartment. Airbags and other vehicle safety systems are designed to work together with seat belts to provide additional protection during a collision.
