Chesapeake City, MD (July 6, 2026) – Nine people were injured after a boat explosion along the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal near Schaefer’s Canal House in Chesapeake City shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 4. The blast occurred after a 1988 Wellcraft 32-foot cruiser had finished refueling at the marina.
Seven people aboard the vessel and two dock workers were affected. Four people were airlifted to nearby hospitals, while the remaining injured people were taken by ambulance. Those with serious burns included a 16-year-old boy, a 19-year-old man from Elkton, Delaware, and a 31-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man from Newark, Delaware. The two dock workers, ages 18 and 20, were evaluated at a local hospital as a precaution because of possible smoke inhalation. A 23-year-old person, a 21-year-old man, and a 50-year-old man were also reported hurt.
Photos released after the explosion showed significant damage inside the boat, including torn seats, while the vessel’s exterior remained largely intact. Investigators are examining whether the fuel vapor blower was not activated or was not allowed enough time to vent fumes before the engine was started.
The cause of the explosion remains under review as investigators continue gathering evidence.
