Jackson, MO (January 2, 2026) – A fatal pedestrian crash took place on Thursday night on westbound Interstate 70 near mile marker 18 in Jackson County, claiming the life of a 17-year-old boy from Oak Grove.

The tragic incident occurred at approximately 8:46 p.m. on January 1, when a 2024 Ford Bronco, driven by a 27-year-old woman from Independence, struck the teenager in the roadway. Emergency crews responded quickly, but the young pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene by Trooper A.K. Booker at 8:41 p.m.

The driver, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was not injured. Her vehicle sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Elite Towing. Officials confirmed that the victim’s next of kin has been notified.

This crash is officially recorded as Troop A’s first fatal crash and fatality of 2026. Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including the MSHP Major Crash Investigation Unit, Blue Springs Police Department, and Independence Police Department. The cause of the pedestrian’s presence on the highway remains under investigation.

Our sincere condolences are extended to the teen’s family and loved ones during this heartbreaking time.

Highway Pedestrian Deaths in Missouri

This heartbreaking fatality along I-70 near Independence highlights the ongoing dangers pedestrians face when present on high-speed highways. While highways are restricted from pedestrian access for safety reasons, fatal incidents involving individuals on foot continue to occur across Missouri, especially in urban-edge zones like Jackson County.

The circumstances behind this teen’s presence on the roadway remain under review, but this tragedy reflects a broader issue affecting communities throughout the state. With limited lighting, fast-moving vehicles, and driver reaction time reduced at night, pedestrian crashes on highways frequently result in loss of life.

In recent years, Missouri has seen efforts to improve pedestrian safety through awareness campaigns and expanded infrastructure in some areas, but highway environments still pose extreme risks. Families impacted by such crashes often experience profound grief and confusion, and the legal aftermath can be equally overwhelming.

When fatal pedestrian accidents happen, it’s critical that families receive timely access to grief support, legal guidance, and advocacy. Questions around liability, insurance coverage, and the circumstances leading up to the crash require careful attention and professional care.
