Kansas City, KS (January 6, 2026) – Two individuals were hospitalized following a high-speed, single-vehicle crash on northbound I-635 near Metropolitan Ave late on Monday night. The incident occurred at approximately 9:59 p.m. on January 5, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Authorities reported that a 2011 Lincoln Town Car was traveling north on I-635 at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control. The vehicle initially struck the center concrete barrier, then veered across lanes and collided with a guardrail before coming to rest in the right lane of the interstate.
The driver, identified as 43-year-old Larnie B. Thomas Jr. of Kansas City, KS, sustained suspected minor injuries and was transported to Providence Medical Center. A passenger, 36-year-old Darryl D.M. Hunter of Olathe, was seriously injured and taken to the University of Kansas Hospital for treatment. Officials noted that neither occupant was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
First responders closed portions of the roadway while assisting victims and conducting their on-scene investigation. The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Our thoughts are with both individuals and their families. We especially wish Mr. Hunter strength and healing as he begins recovery from his serious injuries.
Single-Vehicle Crashes in Kansas
Single-vehicle collisions, particularly those involving high speeds and fixed object impacts, often lead to severe or life-threatening injuries. The crash on I-635 near Metropolitan Ave highlights how quickly a loss of control can escalate into a devastating event, especially on highways where speeds are elevated, and safety barriers limit maneuverability.
The presence of serious injuries in this case is compounded by the fact that neither occupant was reportedly wearing a seat belt. According to state traffic safety data, proper seat belt use is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of death or severe injury in a crash. While the investigation into the exact speed and factors involved continues, the incident underscores the critical role of occupant protection systems and responsible driving habits.
High-speed roadways like I-635 require full driver attention and vehicle control at all times. Distraction, impairment, or excessive speed can quickly lead to a scenario where recovery becomes impossible. For those injured in such crashes, recovery may include long-term hospitalization, rehabilitation, and emotional trauma, on top of financial and legal burdens.
