Wichita, KS (January 12, 2026) – A 74-year-old man died, and multiple people were injured following a wrong-way, multi-vehicle crash Sunday evening on Kansas Highway 96 near West St in northwest Wichita, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
The fatal incident occurred just before 7:00 p.m., after troopers began receiving calls around 6:45 p.m. regarding a wrong-way driver on K-96. Before law enforcement could intercept the vehicle, the driver—later identified as Tim S. Martin of Maize—crashed head-on into a Jeep Grand Cherokee and then struck a Toyota Camry.
Martin’s vehicle, a Honda Accord, came to a stop across the roadway, where it was then T-boned by a GMC Yukon. The impact sent both the Honda and the Yukon into a nearby north ditch. Martin was transported to a local hospital in extremely critical condition, but later succumbed to his injuries.
The GMC Yukon was carrying five occupants. Two children—a 10-year-old boy and an 8-year-old boy—suffered possible and minor injuries, respectively. The other passengers, a 39-year-old man, a 35-year-old woman, and a 6-year-old girl, were unharmed.
Remarkably, both the 25-year-old woman driving the Jeep and the 34-year-old man operating the Toyota Camry escaped injury.
Authorities believe the Honda traveled the wrong direction for at least seven miles before the fatal sequence of collisions occurred. It remains unclear whether alcohol or drug impairment played a role.
Kansas Highway Patrol officials continue to investigate the incident and are urging drivers to remain alert, especially during nighttime hours.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Tim S. Martin and send our best wishes for recovery to those injured in this tragic collision.
