Franklin County, VA (January 15, 2026) – A tragic two-vehicle crash on Monday night claimed the life of Dr. Diane Rowell, a longtime physician from Martinsville. The fatal collision occurred January 12 on Route 122, also known as Booker T. Washington Highway, near the intersection with Route 116/Jubal Early Highway.
According to Virginia State Police, Dr. Rowell was seriously injured when her vehicle collided with a slow-moving farm-use truck in low-light conditions. She was transported to a nearby hospital where, despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was not reported to be hurt.
Dr. Rowell had served as a physician at Sovah Health-Martinsville since 2012 and was known for her dedication to the local community. Her passing marks a significant loss for both her colleagues and the patients she cared for over the years.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. At this time, no charges have been announced, and no further details have been provided regarding the visibility or safety measures on the farm vehicle involved.
