Cottonwood, CA (January 18, 2026) – A fatal accident was reported late Friday night on Jellys Ferry Road, prompting a multi-agency emergency response. The incident occurred near the 17960 block of Jellys Ferry Rd, several miles down a dirt road in a remote area north of Cottonwood.
At approximately 10:22 p.m. on January 17, units from the California Highway Patrol and CAL FIRE were dispatched to the scene. First responders arrived to find a vehicle approximately 20 feet down an embankment and partially submerged in standing water. Due to the remote terrain and location, recovery efforts required specialized equipment, and a wrecker from J and L Anderson was called in after initial tow providers were unavailable or unresponsive.
Authorities confirmed the incident as a fatality, though no information has yet been released regarding the victim’s identity or the cause of the crash. The road remained active with emergency personnel for an extended period as crews worked to access the scene and begin their investigation.
CHP officers noted difficulty in reaching the vehicle and coordinating removal, given the embankment and water conditions. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether speed, visibility, or road surface conditions played a role.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the person who lost their life in this tragic incident.
