Newport News, VA (January 18, 2026) – A school bus carrying students from Crittenden Middle School was struck by a vehicle Friday afternoon in Newport News, sending several children to the hospital. The crash occurred around 3:16 p.m. near the intersection where 80th Street and 81st Street meet Marshall Avenue, prompting a swift emergency response.
According to Newport News Police, the bus was transporting approximately 40 students when it was hit by a Jeep. In the aftermath of the collision, 11 children reported symptoms described as “minor discomfort,” with scanner traffic initially indicating concerns about possible head injuries. Seven of the students were transported to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation and treatment.
Emergency crews assessed the scene while police worked to ensure all children were accounted for and safely cared for. A second school bus was brought in to transport the remaining students home.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the crash to determine what led to the collision. No further details about the Jeep driver or potential citations have been released at this time.
