San Mateo, CA (January 19, 2026) – A multi-vehicle collision early Sunday morning in San Mateo resulted in major injuries and traffic disruption along Highway 101, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 1:52 a.m. on the northbound side of Hwy 101, just south of the Peninsula Ave off-ramp. Authorities confirmed that four vehicles were involved in the pileup, including a blue Toyota, a gray Kia SUV, and a black Honda pickup truck.
Fire crews and paramedics responded quickly to the scene and assisted at least one individual who suffered major injuries. That person was transported to San Francisco General Hospital for further medical care. Additional injuries were not immediately confirmed.
Due to the severity of the collision and cleanup efforts, multiple lanes were temporarily closed. Traffic was impacted for more than an hour before all lanes were reopened by 3:06 a.m.
The CHP is continuing to investigate the events leading up to the crash, including what factors may have contributed to the pileup.
