El Cajon, CA (January 20, 2026) – A pedestrian was killed early Friday morning after being struck by a vehicle on westbound Interstate 8 near the Mollison Ave on-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fatal incident occurred shortly after 1:18 a.m., when the pedestrian was walking along the westbound lanes of I-8. The driver involved in the collision stopped immediately after the impact and attempted to alert oncoming traffic by signaling for them to slow down until authorities arrived.
CHP officers responded to the scene and conducted a full investigation, including a field sobriety test and breathalyzer. They later determined that neither alcohol nor drugs played a role in the crash. The driver cooperated fully and was escorted from the freeway once investigators completed their initial assessment.
The vehicle involved reportedly sustained moderate front-end damage on the right side. Officials noted that the surrounding area was very dark at the time of the crash, and the pedestrian did not appear to be connected to any disabled vehicle or previous collision.
Traffic along westbound I-8 was temporarily disrupted as CHP officers managed lane closures and emergency crews responded. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office has been notified and will work to confirm the identity of the deceased pedestrian.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the individual who lost their life in this tragic event.
