Oakham, MA (January 21, 2026) – A tragic house fire claimed the life of one resident early on Wednesday morning in Oakham, according to a joint statement released by Oakham Fire Chief Timothy Howe, Oakham Police Chief Frederick J. Gehring, State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine, and Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.
Emergency crews were dispatched to 67 Skyline Dr around 12:45 a.m. following a 911 call from a nearby neighbor reporting flames and smoke. When first responders arrived, they encountered a fully involved single-family residence, with fire conditions intensified by freezing weather and six inches of snow on the ground.
Officials reported that a Rutland police officer attempted to enter the home prior to fire crews’ arrival but was forced back by the extreme heat and smoke. Firefighters worked under dangerous conditions, facing subzero wind chills and frozen hoselines, which created severe ice hazards at the scene.
Despite rapid response and aggressive firefighting efforts, one adult, believed to be the sole occupant of the home, was found deceased inside. The victim’s identity has not been publicly released pending formal identification by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, which will also determine the cause and manner of death.
Due to the severity of the blaze and remote location, multiple alarms were struck, and tankers were called in to supply water throughout the operation.
We extend our deepest condolences to those impacted by this devastating loss.
