Chicago, IL (April 29, 2026) – A multi-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer shut down northbound Interstate 57 on Tuesday morning, April 28, on Chicago’s South Side.
Illinois State Police said the crash happened around 7:55 a.m. near Halsted Street. Officials were working to determine why a semi-truck crashed into several other vehicles.
All northbound lanes of Interstate 57 were blocked around 9 a.m. The closure caused delays while emergency units responded and crews worked to clear the scene.
All lanes reopened by about 9:40 a.m. Emergency units transported four people from the scene.
The crash remains under investigation, and additional details may become available as authorities continue their review. We wish those affected a swift and full recovery.
Traffic Delays After Multi-Vehicle Highway Crashes
Multi-vehicle highway crashes can block several lanes at once, especially when a tractor-trailer is involved. Large trucks need more space to stop and can affect several vehicles during one crash.
Morning crashes on busy interstates can quickly cause long backups. Drivers may face sudden stops, lane closures, and slow traffic while emergency units work nearby. Even after a crash is cleared, delays can continue as traffic returns to normal.
A crash scene may also require checks for vehicle damage, debris, and fuel leaks. When several vehicles are involved, crews may need extra time to move each one safely and reopen the roadway.
