Apple Valley, CA (January 21, 2026) – A pedestrian was killed late Sunday night in a collision on Highway 18 near Apple Valley Rd, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. The victim has since been identified as 37-year-old Hughie Sheppard.
The deadly incident took place at approximately 10:54 p.m. on January 18, along the eastbound lanes of Highway 18. Investigators stated that a grey 2015 Nissan Altima was traveling in the No. 2 lane when it struck Sheppard, who was reportedly in the roadway at the time.
The driver of the Altima, a 21-year-old man from Victorville, remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement during their preliminary investigation. It is currently unknown what factors may have contributed to the crash, and authorities have not indicated whether impairment or speed played a role.
Emergency crews responded swiftly, but tragically, Sheppard was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to determine the full sequence of events and any underlying causes. No arrests or citations have been reported at this stage.
