Berkeley, CA (January 21, 2026) – A pedestrian was killed on Monday morning after being struck by a Union Pacific freight train on the railroad tracks near Hearst Ave in Berkeley, local authorities confirmed.
The fatal incident occurred around 11:45 a.m. on January 19, just north of Hearst Ave between Second St and Fourth St. Officials say the pedestrian was walking along the tracks for unknown reasons when the train, traveling through the area, struck the individual.
Berkeley Police and fire personnel responded quickly to the scene, but the pedestrian was pronounced dead upon their arrival. The identity of the victim has not yet been released pending family notification.
The freight train involved came to a full stop south of Camelia St following the collision. No injuries were reported among the train’s crew or any individuals aboard.
In the aftermath, a section of Hearst Ave was temporarily closed as first responders investigated and cleared the scene. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident, including why the pedestrian was on the tracks at the time.
