Butler, MO (January 26, 2026) – A tragic accident involving two pickup trucks resulted in the death of a pedestrian early on Monday morning along Missouri Route 53, approximately three miles south of Poplar Bluff.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol confirmed that the incident took place at around 12:01 a.m., when a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado began to back up along the roadway under circumstances that remain under investigation. As the vehicle moved, it struck a 57-year-old man from Portageville, who was outside his vehicle at the time. After the initial contact, the man was then hit by a second vehicle involved in the crash.
Emergency medical services responded promptly and transported the injured pedestrian to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at 1:16 a.m. by Dr. Chad Armstrong. Authorities have confirmed that the victim’s next of kin have been notified.
Both vehicles, the 2005 Ford F150 and the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado, sustained minor damage and were towed from the scene by Barker’s Towing. The driver of the Ford F150 was identified as a 61-year-old man from Poplar Bluff who was not wearing a safety device at the time of the incident. Details on the second driver remain unknown.
Troop E of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, including Tpr. E. N. Stinson, Sgt. B. L. Riefle, and Tpr. J. D. Conover conducted the on-site investigation. The crash marks the second fatality recorded by Troop E in 2026.
