Fresno, CA (January 29, 2026) – Authorities have now identified the pedestrian who was struck and killed on Highway 99 near Belmont Ave during the early morning hours of January 27 as 37-year-old Andrew Magana of Fresno.
The fatal incident unfolded in two phases. Around 12:10 a.m., officers with the California Highway Patrol responded to reports of a vehicle stopped in the fast lane of the transition road from Highway 99 to Highway 180. The vehicle, a Toyota Prius, was found with its engine running and door ajar, but no crash was evident. It was subsequently towed from the roadway.
Approximately 35 minutes later, at around 12:45 a.m., CHP received additional reports of a man running through active traffic lanes on Highway 99. Soon after, they were alerted that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle near Belmont Ave. Responding officers confirmed that the individual fatally struck was the same person who had earlier abandoned the Prius.
Magana was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver who hit him, a 22-year-old motorist, was found to be under the influence of alcohol and was arrested following the crash.
The California Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the events leading up to the deadly collision.
