Cranston, RI (February 21, 2026) – A man suffered critical injuries on Friday evening after being struck by a vehicle on Garfield Avenue in Cranston.

The crash happened around 7:55 p.m. on February 20, between Texas Roadhouse and Route 10 South. Emergency units responded to reports of a pedestrian hit in the roadway and found an adult man lying along the side of the street with a serious head injury. He was alert and conscious at the scene.

The pedestrian was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment. Medical staff later reported that he suffered a broken leg, a concussion, possible internal injuries, and a head laceration. The driver, described as a teen operating a 2009 Honda Accord, remained at the scene, called 911, and provided aid. Preliminary information indicates the pedestrian was walking northbound while the vehicle was traveling southbound. Weather conditions included rain, sleet, fog, and temperatures near 34 degrees at the time of the crash.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they become available.

We are keeping the injured man in our thoughts and hope for his recovery.

How Weather and Visibility Affect Pedestrian Safety on Busy Roads

Pedestrian crashes often increase during poor weather conditions. Rain, sleet, and fog can reduce visibility for drivers and make it harder to see someone walking along or crossing the road. Wet pavement may also increase stopping distance, even at moderate speeds.

Roads like Garfield Ave that connect to major routes such as Rte 10 can carry steady evening traffic. Street lighting may help, but glare from headlights and reflections on wet pavement can limit how clearly drivers see their surroundings.

Pedestrians walking along busy corridors at night face added risks. Wearing reflective clothing and using well-lit crossing areas can improve visibility. Drivers should reduce speed in poor weather and remain alert for people walking near the roadway.
