Pedestrian Risks on Local Roadways at Night
Pedestrian crashes often become more dangerous after dark. Reduced visibility can make it harder for drivers to see someone crossing outside of marked areas. Even on city streets, reaction time is limited when a person suddenly enters the roadway.
Areas without traffic signals or crosswalks may increase the risk of collisions. Drivers traveling at regular roadway speeds may not be able to stop in time if a pedestrian darts into traffic.
Lighting, reflective clothing, and the use of designated crossings can help reduce these risks. In many communities, evening hours continue to be one of the most common times for serious pedestrian accidents.
