Why Intersection Collisions on State Highways Can Be Severe
State highways often carry steady traffic at moderate to high speeds. When a vehicle turns across oncoming lanes, drivers traveling in the opposite direction may have little time to avoid a crash.
Side-impact and angle collisions at intersections can cause significant damage, especially when larger vehicles such as pickup trucks are involved. Even a brief miscalculation in timing can result in a direct impact.
Rural highway intersections may not have traffic signals, placing greater responsibility on drivers to judge gaps in traffic. Careful attention and reduced speed when approaching intersections can help lower the risk of serious collisions.
