Lee County, FL (February 28, 2026) – One person was injured Friday morning after a two-vehicle collision at a busy Lee County intersection sent an SUV off the roadway and into a commercial building.

According to local officials, the crash occurred at the intersection of College Parkway and Kenwood Lane. Emergency crews responded after an SUV left the roadway and struck the exterior of the Kenwood Commons Shopping Plaza.

One of the drivers involved told reporters she was attempting to make a U-turn when her vehicle collided with a white SUV traveling through the intersection. Following the impact, the white SUV continued off the road and crashed into the building.

Fire officials confirmed that the driver of the SUV that struck the structure was transported to a nearby hospital for further medical evaluation. The extent of the injuries has not been disclosed.

Authorities stated that the vehicle impacted the exterior wall of the plaza. According to South Trail Fire & Rescue, the damage was limited to exterior cosmetic impact, and the building’s structural integrity was not compromised.

We extend our best wishes to the injured individual for a full recovery.

How Do Intersection Collisions Lead to Secondary Property Damage?

Crashes at signalized or multi-lane intersections can produce enough force to redirect vehicles beyond their intended path of travel. When a vehicle is struck during a turning maneuver, especially a U-turn, the point of impact may alter steering alignment and momentum, making it difficult for the driver to regain control immediately.

In commercial corridors where buildings are positioned relatively close to the roadway, a vehicle that leaves the travel lanes can quickly encounter fixed structures such as storefronts, exterior walls, or parking barriers.

Investigations into these incidents typically examine right-of-way compliance, vehicle speed, visibility conditions, and the execution of turning movements. U-turns require drivers to accurately judge approaching traffic gaps and account for oncoming vehicle speeds. Miscalculations in timing or distance can result in broadside or angled collisions.

When a building is involved, fire and rescue teams conduct structural assessments to ensure that load-bearing components remain intact. Even when exterior façade damage appears minor, emergency responders must confirm that the impact did not compromise the safety of occupants or neighboring businesses.

Safety officials routinely advise motorists to exercise heightened caution when performing turning maneuvers at busy intersections, particularly during morning traffic periods when vehicle flow may be heavier and reaction windows narrower.
