Tuscola, TX (March 2, 2026) – Injuries were reported on Sunday afternoon following a two-vehicle collision south of Abilene, according to officials at the scene.
The crash occurred at the intersection of Highway 83/84 and Bell Plains Road, just north of Tuscola.
Authorities said a truck was traveling southbound on Highway 83/84 when a Chevrolet Corvette attempted to turn onto the highway from Bell Plains Road. The truck driver reported seeing the Corvette and attempting to stop before the vehicles collided.
The impact pushed the Corvette across the roadway to the north side of the highway and into a wire fence. Both vehicles sustained visible damage.
Officials on scene indicated that the occupant of the Corvette suffered injuries but declined medical transport. No other injuries were reported.
The crash remains under review as authorities work to determine the precise sequence of events.
We extend our best wishes for a full recovery to those injured in the crash.
Why Are Highway Entry and Turning Collisions Common at Rural Intersections?
Collisions frequently occur when vehicles attempt to enter or cross high-speed highways from side roads. At intersections such as Highway 83/84 and Bell Plains Road, drivers must accurately judge the speed and distance of approaching traffic before merging or turning.
Highways serving both regional and local traffic often see a mix of travel speeds, which can complicate decision-making for drivers entering from stop-controlled side roads. Even when an approaching driver attempts to brake, stopping distance may be limited depending on speed, vehicle weight, and road conditions.
Side-impact or angled collisions at highway junctions can result in vehicles being pushed off the roadway, as occurred when the Corvette was forced into a fence. Impacts at highway speeds can quickly escalate in severity.
Investigators typically examine skid marks, vehicle rest positions, right-of-way compliance, and visibility conditions when reconstructing crashes at rural intersections. Additional findings may be released as the review continues.
