Louisville, KY (March 3, 2026) – A man was arrested after a car crashed into a restaurant along Bardstown Road in Louisville’s Highlands neighborhood Saturday night, February 28, leaving one person taken to a hospital.

Emergency units were dispatched after reports that a vehicle had struck the side of Kiwami Ramen. When crews arrived, they found a car lodged against the building and visible damage to the restaurant structure.

Witnesses told responding officers they saw 29-year-old Alexis Calvillo driving the vehicle before the crash. Several people were sitting at a nearby table when the car hit the building, and four people narrowly avoided being struck.

One person at the table, who was pregnant, was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation following the incident. The extent of injuries was not released.

According to the report, Calvillo left the immediate area after the crash but was later approached by officers nearby. Authorities said he failed to comply with commands and made threats toward officers before being detained.

Calvillo was taken into custody and faces charges including wanton endangerment, leaving the scene, criminal mischief, and resisting arrest. He was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday morning.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they become available.

Our thoughts are with those affected as they continue to recover.

Why Vehicles Sometimes Crash Into Buildings in Busy Commercial Areas

Vehicles striking buildings occur more often than many people realize, especially in areas with heavy traffic and closely spaced parking. Restaurants and small businesses located along busy streets often have parking spaces directly in front of storefronts. In these settings, a driver may accidentally accelerate instead of braking or lose control while entering or leaving a parking spot.

Other factors can also contribute to these incidents. Driver distraction, impairment, mechanical problems, or sudden medical issues may cause a vehicle to veer off the roadway or parking lot. When this happens near outdoor seating or crowded storefronts, the risk to pedestrians increases.

Many businesses install barriers such as steel posts or reinforced curbs to help reduce the chance of a vehicle reaching the building. These safety measures can slow or stop a vehicle before it enters areas where customers are seated or walking nearby.
