How Large Residential Fires Can Spread Between Structures
Residential fires can spread rapidly, especially when buildings are close together. Heat, wind, and shared walls or roofing materials may allow flames to spread quickly from one structure to another.
Older homes or multi-family buildings with open floor plans can also allow fire to travel quickly between levels. Once flames reach upper floors or attics, they may intensify and become harder to contain.
When multiple structures are involved, additional crews are often needed to manage water supply, ventilation, and search efforts. Street closures are common to provide space for emergency equipment and to keep nearby residents safe while the fire is brought under control.
