Is Route 70 Dangerous in New Jersey?
Route 70 is one of the main east–west highways across southern and central New Jersey. It runs through several counties, including Monmouth County, and carries a steady flow of commuter and commercial traffic each day. Because of the traffic volume and the number of intersections along the route, crashes do occur along parts of the highway.
In Monmouth County, traffic data from the New Jersey Department of Transportation shows that thousands of crashes are reported each year. Recent statewide records indicate that Monmouth County saw more than 9,000 total traffic crashes in 2023, including over 3,000 crashes that involved injuries and several dozen that resulted in fatalities.
These numbers place the county among the higher totals in New Jersey due to its population size and busy road network.
Roads like Route 70 tend to see a mix of local and through traffic. In areas where the highway passes through towns, drivers encounter traffic lights, turning lanes, and vehicles entering from side streets. These conditions can increase the chance of collisions, especially during evening rush hours and weekend travel periods.
Monmouth County also has several major routes that intersect or connect with Route 70, including highways that lead to the Jersey Shore and nearby suburban communities. That combination of regional travel and daily commuting can lead to heavy traffic at certain times of the day.
