Why Bicycle vs. Vehicle Crashes Often Turn Deadly
Crashes involving bicycles and motor vehicles can be especially severe due to the difference in size and protection between the two. When a bicycle is struck from behind or the side, the rider has little physical protection from impact forces.
Low visibility conditions, early morning hours, and shared roadway use can also increase risk. Even when vehicles are traveling at moderate speeds, the energy of impact can result in fatal injuries. These types of crashes often lead to detailed investigations to understand roadway conditions and driver awareness at the time of the incident.
