Vail, CO (March 6, 2026)—Four people were taken to a hospital following a three-vehicle crash on eastbound Interstate 70 near milepost 254, east of South Mount Vernon Country Club Road.
The crash occurred at approximately 5:50 p.m. on Friday, March 6. A semi hauling a trailer, a Dodge Durango, and a Chevrolet Silverado were involved in a rear-end collision. All four people injured were occupants of the Dodge Durango. The extent of their injuries has not been released. No other individuals involved were reported hurt.
Interstate 70 was closed near milepost 254 for about 1.5 hours while crews investigated the crash and cleared the scene. Winter weather conditions in the area contributed to icy and snow-packed roadways at the time.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be provided as they become available.
Our thoughts are with those injured as they receive medical care.
Winter Driving Hazards and Rear-End Collisions
Icy and snow-packed roads can make stopping distances much longer and increase the likelihood of rear-end collisions. Vehicles traveling too close to others or at speeds unsuitable for conditions may be unable to slow down in time to prevent a crash.
Trucks and semis pose additional risk due to their larger size and weight, which can make controlling or stopping quickly more difficult. Drivers are encouraged to maintain extra following distance, reduce speed, and remain alert when traveling in winter weather. Even minor slips on icy patches can quickly result in multi-vehicle accidents, especially on highways with heavy traffic.
