Detroit, MI (March 9, 2026) – A 23-year-old driver died, and another person was injured on Sunday morning, March 8, after a sedan collided with the rear of a tow truck on eastbound Interstate 96 in Detroit.

Michigan State Police reported the crash occurred at 3:05 a.m. Troopers arriving at the scene found the sedan blocking the middle lane of the highway, while the tow truck was stopped on the left shoulder.

Investigators said the sedan’s driver lost control, causing the vehicle to strike the rear of the tow truck. The driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tow truck operator was taken to a local hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening. No further details about the hospital-treated motorist have been released.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.

Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased.

Why Rear-End Crashes with Tow Trucks Can Be Dangerous

Collisions involving stationary or slow-moving tow trucks on highways can be particularly severe. Tow trucks are often large and stationary, meaning drivers approaching from behind must react quickly to avoid impact.

Highway speeds and limited reaction time increase the likelihood of losing control, especially if visibility is low or road conditions are poor. Even minor steering errors at high speeds can result in collisions with heavy vehicles.

Emergency responders focus on quickly assessing injuries, providing medical care, and securing the scene to prevent secondary crashes. Wearing seatbelts and maintaining proper distance from stopped vehicles are critical factors in reducing injury risk in these types of incidents.
