Gates, NY (March 10, 2026) – Police have identified the family involved in Thursday’s, March 5, crash that killed a 6-month-old baby in Gates. Jake, Kelly, and Noah Carpenter were stopped at a traffic light in their SUV on Buffalo Road at Howard Road when another eastbound SUV struck them from behind at high speed. Both parents were severely injured, and their infant son did not survive.
The collision caused heavy damage to both vehicles. A utility pole also fell onto the striking SUV, which came to rest on Howard Road. Emergency units responded promptly to the scene. The incident remains under review by authorities.
Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased, and we wish the injured a swift recovery.
Understanding Rear-End Collisions and Their Risks
Rear-end collisions often occur when one vehicle fails to stop in time for the traffic ahead. Speed plays a major role in the severity of these crashes, as higher speeds increase the force of impact. Even short stops at traffic lights can be dangerous if drivers are distracted or brake suddenly.
Infants and young children are especially vulnerable, as they can suffer severe injuries even in low-speed impacts. Vehicle safety features like seat belts and car seats can reduce harm but cannot fully prevent fatal outcomes in high-speed collisions. Roadside hazards, such as utility poles or debris, may also worsen the consequences of an accident.
