Fox Lake, IL (March 10, 2026) – A 52-year-old man died after being rescued from a fire Monday morning, March 9, in Fox Lake. The fire occurred in the 0–100 block of St. Thomas Colony Street within the Vacation Village community.
Emergency units responded around 7:12 a.m. after a caller reported a structure fire at the multi-unit residential building. When crews arrived, they found active flames and smoke coming from an end unit of a two-story condominium building.
Firefighters entered the unit and located an adult male inside the residence. He was rescued from the burning condo and taken to paramedics before being transported to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry in critical condition.
The man later died at the hospital. Authorities have not released his name as they work to notify family members.
The fire was contained to the room where it began within about 10 to 15 minutes. The condominium unit where the fire started sustained major damage and was declared uninhabitable, while nearby units were later cleared for residents to return. The incident remains under review by authorities.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
Residential Fire Damage in Multi-Unit Buildings
Residential fires inside condominium buildings can spread quickly because several homes share walls, ceilings, and ventilation spaces. Even when flames are contained to one unit, heat and smoke may move through nearby areas and affect neighboring residences.
Fires that begin in kitchens are among the more common types reported in residential structures. Cooking equipment, electrical appliances, and flammable materials can all contribute to ignition if heat builds up or if an accident occurs while food is being prepared.
Smoke damage may extend beyond the original fire area. Thick smoke can move upward through stairwells, hallways, and ventilation openings, which sometimes affects other units in the same building even when the flames are controlled within a single room.
