How Smoking Materials Often Lead to Residential Fires
Improperly discarded smoking materials remain one of the more common causes of residential fires in the United States. Cigarettes, cigars, and similar items can stay hot long after they appear to be extinguished.
When these materials are thrown into trash bins, left on furniture, or dropped near flammable items, they can slowly ignite surrounding materials. Upholstered furniture, bedding, and dry debris are especially vulnerable because they can begin smoldering before flames appear.
Smoke from these fires can spread quickly through a home, sometimes affecting occupants before they notice visible flames. Because of this, many fire safety groups encourage smokers to fully extinguish materials in sturdy containers and avoid smoking indoors when possible.
Working smoke alarms and clear exit paths can also help residents respond quickly if a fire begins inside the home.
