How Secondary Impacts Can Lead to Pedestrian Crashes
Pedestrian accidents sometimes occur after an initial vehicle crash. When two vehicles collide, the impact force can push one of them off the roadway or into nearby areas where people may be standing or walking.
These secondary movements can send a vehicle toward sidewalks, bus stops, or roadside spaces. Pedestrians in these areas may have little time to react if a vehicle suddenly leaves the travel lanes.
Rear-end crashes can create this type of situation, especially on busy roads where vehicles follow closely behind one another. A strong impact from behind may cause a driver to lose control or move unexpectedly into another area.
Bus stops and roadside waiting areas are common locations where pedestrians gather near traffic. If a vehicle exits the roadway after a crash, people standing nearby may face increased risk of being struck.
