St. Clair Co., IL (March 16, 2026) – Two people were hurt in a crash involving a tractor-trailer on Sunday morning, March 15, on Interstate 70 near the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge.
Emergency units responded just before 9:30 a.m. to the area near mile marker 1 after reports of a collision between a passenger vehicle and a semi-truck. Authorities said the tractor-trailer was traveling at a reduced speed due to a flat tire.
Investigators reported that a passenger vehicle traveling behind the truck attempted to pass the slower-moving semi. During the maneuver, the car struck the rear of the tractor-trailer. Two people inside the passenger vehicle were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials have not released further information about the severity of their injuries.
The crash led to the closure of lanes on Interstate 70 while crews worked to clear the roadway. Traffic heading toward the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge was temporarily blocked before the lanes gradually reopened later in the morning.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
We extend our thoughts to those injured and wish them a full recovery.
Factors Often Reviewed After Rear-End Crashes on Interstates
Main travel routes near Interstate 70 and mile marker 1 can experience sudden slowdowns, especially when vehicles reduce speed due to mechanical issues or roadway conditions. When crashes occur in St. Clair County, crews often focus on managing traffic and clearing hazards.
Rear-end collisions on highways may happen when drivers approach slower vehicles without enough distance to react. Passing attempts or lane changes can also create risk when traffic speeds vary between vehicles.
Investigations often review vehicle spacing, speed, and driver actions leading up to the crash. These details may help explain how the collision occurred and why traffic conditions changed just before impact.
