Kauaʻi, HI (March 17, 2026) – A teenager was critically injured in a multi-vehicle crash early Monday, March 16, on Kaumualiʻi Highway in Kauaʻi. The collision occurred around 7 a.m. near the intersection with ʻŌmaʻo Road.
According to reports, a Toyota sedan attempting to turn left onto the highway was struck by an eastbound Toyota truck. After the initial impact, the truck lost control and crossed into the opposite lane, where it was hit by another Toyota truck.
Emergency units responded and transported a teenage driver with critical injuries to the hospital. The teen was later airlifted to a medical center for further treatment.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
We extend our thoughts to those injured and wish them a full recovery.
How Turning Movements Can Lead to Multi-Vehicle Crashes
Crashes at intersections often involve vehicles moving in different directions at the same time. When one vehicle attempts a left turn across oncoming traffic, the risk of a collision increases, especially if timing or visibility is off.
After an initial impact, vehicles can become difficult to control. A car or truck may spin or cross into another lane, creating the potential for additional crashes. This can quickly turn a two-vehicle crash into a multi-vehicle event.
Road design and traffic speed can also affect how these situations unfold. On highways, higher speeds may reduce the time drivers have to react, making it harder to avoid a collision once a turn begins.
