What Happens in Chain-Reaction Crashes on Busy Interstates?
Chain-reaction crashes often occur when one vehicle hits another, causing a ripple effect through nearby traffic. These incidents are more common on busy highways where cars travel close together at higher speeds.
When a driver does not have enough space to stop, even a single impact can involve multiple vehicles. Each additional collision can increase the chance of injuries and damage.
Traffic flow plays a major part in how these crashes develop. Sudden braking, lane changes, or limited visibility can reduce reaction time for drivers behind the initial crash.
Maintaining a safe following distance can help reduce the risk. Giving enough space between vehicles allows more time to react and may prevent a single crash from involving several others.
