How Multi-Vehicle Chain-Reaction Crashes Can Escalate Quickly
Chain-reaction crashes often begin with a single impact, such as a rear-end collision. Once a vehicle is forced out of its lane, it can enter oncoming traffic and create additional impacts within seconds.
These types of crashes are especially dangerous on divided highways, where vehicles travel in opposite directions at higher speeds. Even a brief loss of control can lead to multiple collisions involving several lanes of traffic.
Emergency response typically focuses on treating injuries first and then restoring safe traffic flow once the scene is secured.
