Pike County, MO (April 25, 2026) – A woman and a teenage girl from Ashland were seriously injured on Thursday, April 23, in a three-vehicle crash on Highway 54 west of Route UU.

According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report, the crash involved three eastbound vehicles. Investigators said a 35-year-old Jefferson City man driving a semi-truck slowed after encountering ducks in the roadway.

A 53-year-old Ashland woman driving a 2024 Nissan Rogue also slowed behind the semi. Her vehicle was then struck from behind by a 2021 Isuzu NPR driven by a 53-year-old man from Edwardsville, Illinois, according to the report.

The impact caused serious injuries to the Ashland driver and her 14-year-old passenger. Both were flown to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis for treatment. The driver of the Isuzu sustained moderate injuries and was transported by ambulance to St. Joseph Hospital. The semi-truck driver was not injured.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.

We are thinking of the injured woman and her passenger.

Why Sudden Slowdowns on Highways Can Lead to Chain-Reaction Crashes

Highway crashes often occur when traffic slows unexpectedly, leaving little time for drivers behind to react. Even when a lead vehicle slows for an obstacle, following drivers may not anticipate the change in speed.

In multi-vehicle situations, each reaction can create a chain effect, especially when larger vehicles like trucks and delivery vehicles are involved. Differences in stopping distance can increase the risk of secondary impacts.

These types of crashes often highlight the importance of maintaining a safe following distance and remaining alert to sudden changes in traffic flow.
