Wythe County, VA (March 21, 2026) – A driver was injured after a crash involving a van that caught fire on Wednesday afternoon, March 18, along Interstate 81 southbound near mile marker 70. The incident occurred around 4:51 p.m. when traffic had slowed in the left lane.
Investigators said a vehicle was slowing when it was rear-ended by a 2023 Ram 3500 van. The impact caused the van to catch fire shortly after the collision. Felipe Baez, 42, was driving the van and suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital. The driver of the other vehicle reported minor injuries.
Emergency units at the scene pulled the van’s driver away from the burning vehicle and brought him to safety. Officials said Baez was later charged with reckless driving.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
Vehicle Fires After Crashes Can Escalate Danger Quickly
Vehicle fires can develop rapidly after a crash, especially when fuel systems or engine components are damaged. Even a short delay in exiting the vehicle can increase the risk of serious injury.
Rear-end collisions at highway speeds may cause significant damage that leads to overheating or sparks. These conditions can ignite a fire within moments of impact.
Quick response and distance from the vehicle can help reduce harm. Fires following crashes often require immediate attention due to the speed at which they can spread and intensify.
