Hampton, VA (March 23, 2026) – A 14-year-old girl and an infant were seriously injured in a crash early Monday morning on Interstate 64 in Hampton. The incident occurred around 2:04 a.m. near the 261-mile marker eastbound.
Authorities said the teen was driving a silver sedan when it ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a guardrail. The vehicle then crossed the interstate, left the roadway again, and hit a jersey wall.
The driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. Officials reported she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time. An infant passenger in the vehicle was also seriously injured and was not properly restrained.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
What Happens When Vehicles Leave the Roadway on Highways
When a vehicle leaves the roadway, it can strike barriers, guardrails, or other fixed objects. These impacts can cause the vehicle to change direction suddenly or re-enter traffic.
Multiple impacts, such as hitting both sides of a highway, can increase the severity of a crash. Each collision adds force and may lead to more damage and injury.
Passenger safety measures, including seatbelts and proper restraints, can affect injury outcomes. High-speed roadways can increase risks when vehicles lose control.
