Woodstock, NH (March 28, 2026) – A tour bus fire led to a temporary shutdown of Interstate 93 northbound in Woodstock. The incident occurred just before 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 27, near mile marker 99.
Authorities reported the bus was carrying about 60 junior high students and adult staff members from Massachusetts. Smoke was first noticed coming from the engine compartment just south of Exit 32. The driver pulled over, allowing everyone onboard to evacuate as the bus continued to fill with smoke.
When emergency units arrived, the rear of the bus was fully engulfed in flames. Crews worked to bring the fire under control while ensuring all passengers were accounted for. One adult was taken to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, while no other injuries were reported.
Students and staff were escorted to a nearby business in Lincoln, where they waited safely until a replacement bus arrived. Northbound lanes of Interstate 93 were closed for about 90 minutes, with traffic diverted at Exit 31 during the response.
The incident remains under review by authorities.
We hope for a quick recovery for the person who was hospitalized.
How Do Bus Fires Typically Start and What Safety Steps Help Protect Passengers?
Bus fires are often linked to mechanical issues, especially in the engine area, where heat and fuel systems are concentrated. Problems such as overheating, fluid leaks, or electrical faults can lead to smoke and, in some cases, flames.
Drivers are trained to respond quickly when warning signs appear. Pulling over and evacuating passengers right away can reduce the risk of injury. Clear emergency exits and practiced evacuation procedures also help people move to safety quickly.
Regular inspections and maintenance play a key role in reducing fire risk. Checking engine components, wiring, and fuel systems can help identify issues before they become dangerous. Quick action combined with proper safety measures can make a major difference in outcomes during these events.
