Why Head-On Lane Departure Crashes Are Often Severe on Highways
Head-on crashes caused by lane departures are among the most dangerous types of roadway collisions. When a vehicle crosses into oncoming traffic, the combined speed of the two vehicles significantly increases the force of impact.
These crashes often occur on rural highways where there may be fewer physical barriers separating directions of travel. Driver fatigue, distraction, or loss of control can all contribute to lane drift.
Even when passengers survive, injuries are often serious due to the direct nature of the impact. Investigations typically focus on roadway position, speed, and driver condition leading up to the collision.
