What Factors Can Affect Pedestrian Safety at Night?
Pedestrian crashes that happen at night can be linked to several factors that reduce visibility and reaction time. Low lighting conditions often make it harder for drivers to see people crossing or walking along the road. Dark clothing can also make pedestrians less noticeable, especially on busy or poorly lit streets.
Traffic speed is another factor. Vehicles moving at higher speeds need more distance to stop, which can increase the severity of a crash. Road design, including crosswalk placement and signal timing, may also affect how safely pedestrians can move through intersections.
Staying visible, using marked crossings, and being aware of surroundings can help reduce risks when traveling on foot after dark.
