Bronx, NY (March 30, 2026) – A fire broke out early Friday morning, March 27, inside a two-story firehouse on Briggs Avenue in the Bedford Park area, leaving multiple firefighters hurt. The incident was reported around 6 a.m. at Engine 79, located between East 199th Street and East 200th Street.
Flames started on the first floor and quickly spread to the apparatus floor and up a stairwell. This blocked access and trapped several firefighters on the second floor. Those inside followed safety steps by staying in a room, closing the door, and waiting for help until crews reached them.
More than 160 emergency units responded to the scene. Crews worked to control the fire while also assisting those inside the building. Images showed firefighters gathered on the roof and visible damage, including broken windows.
At least 14 firefighters were reported hurt, all with minor injuries. Some were taken to nearby hospitals for evaluation. No further details about the cause of the fire have been released at this time.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
Our thoughts are with the injured firefighters as they continue to recover.
What Happens When a Fire Breaks Out Inside a Building?
When a fire starts indoors, smoke and heat can spread quickly through hallways, stairwells, and open spaces. This can make escape routes unsafe within minutes. People inside are often advised to stay in a closed room if they cannot exit safely.
Closing doors can slow the spread of smoke and flames. This helps create a temporary barrier, giving responders more time to reach those inside. Windows may also be used for ventilation or rescue if conditions allow.
Fire crews often enter from multiple points to control the spread and search for anyone inside. Ventilation, water lines, and coordinated movement are key parts of managing indoor fires, especially in multi-level buildings.
