Atlanta, GA (April 1, 2026) – A pedestrian was killed early on Wednesday morning, April 1, in a crash along Interstate 285 westbound near Clark Howell in the Atlanta area. The incident occurred during the morning commute and led to a full shutdown of all lanes for a period of time.
Emergency units responded to the scene after reports of a person being struck on the roadway. Upon arrival, crews found the victim in the lanes of traffic, and the person was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not released the identity of the victim or additional details about the events leading up to the crash.
The closure caused heavy congestion, with delays stretching back toward Jonesboro Road as drivers were directed to alternate routes. Traffic conditions gradually improved after the scene was cleared.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they are provided.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
Why Pedestrian Incidents on Highways Are Especially Dangerous
Highways are designed for high-speed travel, which creates serious risks when pedestrians are present. Drivers may have limited time to react, especially in early morning hours when visibility can be reduced, or traffic is already building.
Unlike city streets, highways often lack safe areas for people on foot. There are no sidewalks, and vehicles travel at speeds that make sudden stops difficult. Even a brief presence in the roadway can lead to severe or fatal outcomes.
When incidents occur, lane closures are often necessary to protect those at the scene and allow for cleanup. These closures can quickly lead to significant backups, especially during peak travel times when traffic volumes are already high.
